Women In The Life Association's Film Series DC's Only Film Series For By And About Lesbians of Color! June 12-June 13, 2008

Women in the Life Association (WITLA) launches its first Film Festival during Capital Pride Week. By all accounts, this high-profile event is unprecedented in the Washington area. It will be DC’s very first film festival strictly by, for, and about lesbians of color. The social justice organization is utilizing film as a new medium to further their mission of giving voice to this underserved community. WITLA's kicked off its ongoing film series by partnering with the DC Rape Crisis Center on Thursday, April 24 to present “The Aggressives,” a film that explores the “dom mystique.” The film was so popular it will be shown again at the film festival’s “That’s A Wrap Sunday Brunch Matinee” at Busboys and Poets from 10am-12pm.

Other films that also reflect the lesbian lifestyle and culture will be shown throughout the year. The film series and sister festival is dedicated to bringing innovative and groundbreaking films to our area! WITLA is determined to combat the media that repeatedly overlooks, or demonizes lesbians of color! In order to know our stories, our histories, ourselves, we must be seen and our voices must be heard. Films will be announced after final jury selections completed. The festival will be choosing from a range of international shorts, documentaries, and entertaining films from Cuba, Puerto Rico, China and the US! This film series, this series, is the just the beginning of making sure lesbians in the district have access to stories of lesbians and women from all over the world. These stories reinforce the fact that they are not alone, nor less than because they are lesbians.
